Darrel didn’t grow up with a Christian background as his parents never actively attend church. However, his uncle offered to take him to church when his parents allowed. About the age of 15, he began to take notice o the gospel being proclaimed and contacted His pastor to learn more. The pastor paid a visit to his home and shared the Roman Road scriptures with him. The pastor told him that whenever he was ready to commit his life to Christ, he could “go forward” at the end of a church service and receive Christ. A couple weeks after the Pastor’s visit, Darrel did respond during the invitation at church and was later baptized. Unfortunately, no life-change resulted after this commitment. Even though he attended church somewhat regularly, Darrel didn’t fully comprehend the gospel.

During his teen years, he struggled with depression and thoughts of suicide. His father was bi-polar which made his home environment difficult. His father often told him that he would never make anything out of himself.

Fast forward to the spring of 1994, Darrel graduated from community college with a AAs in Architecture. He went for work for a company called Easco Aluminum where he met a man named Tim who loved the Lord. It was then that Darrel realized that he was not born again
