I was born in a rural residential area in Zanesville, Ohio in 1947.
My parents attended a Methodist church in town occasionally, and I hated it because I hated being in town. I specially hated singing (it was a boy thing).
I was a habitual liar at 6 years old having to cover lies with other lies. I was never taught the plan of salvation in Sunday school, only stories of perfect Bible heroes. I was being convicted by the Holy Spirit of my lying and I felt like I was in a pit and could not get out. One day at school (1st grade) I stole a single small plastic soldier at recess and put it in my coat pocket. When home I felt convicted and buried the toy soldier.
That week end the family went to a lake and I was walking in 2 feet of water along an edge in a retaining wall in the deep diving area. I slipped off the edge and started to drown. My short life and all my sins pasted before me. I don't know how, but I ended up laying on the sand above the wall with nobody with me. I looked up and the lifeguard was sitting in his tower not noticing me. I did not tell my parents about this on the way home.
That Sunday we did not go to church and stayed home. I was watching a televangelist on TV with my dad and the pastor presented the plan of salvation. I went to my bedroom and sat on the bed facing the window. I prayed confessing my sin and asking God's forgiveness and accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I felt my sin fall from me like a snake shedding its skin. I was no longer in the pit and was free of my habitual lying and stealing. I return the toy soldier to my friend at school.
Since my salvation I have prayed for knowledge and wisdom and His direction in all my decisions and He has blessed me well beyond my ability.
